Once a sleepy fishing and weaving village, the First Opium War shattered the peace and turned it into a colonial city of commerce. It was once known as the ‘Oriental Paris’ in 1930s. Benefiting from the economic reform since 1990, it began its transformation into a modern and exciting metropolis with amazing skylines along the Huangpu River, one bank fringed with European architecture and the other dwarfed by massive skyscrapers. The British influence is easily noticeable in the architecture, city planning and infrastructure as well as the lively social and cultural life. The 2010 World Expo was hosted in Shanghai with over 70 million visitors flooding to the city, cementing its reputation as a truly global destination.
